about

Textiles are an integral part of Oaxaca’s rich culture, and this foundational walking tour covers the essentials: its history, different weaving techniques, materials, and what to look for in a quality piece.

Trip Highlights

Oaxaca is known for her textile diversity, and this adults-only walking tour is an introduction to local textile traditions. Wear comfortable shoes because we’ll cover about 12 city blocks to visit markets and galleries, learning what goes into creating quality pieces. Many are unique and tell a story about family, community, beliefs, and spirituality.

Your trilingual guide will be Eric Chavez Santiago, a weaver and natural dye expert who was the founding director of education at the Museo Textile de Oaxaca. By the end of the tour, you'll be better able to spot the hallmarks of high-quality, authentic textiles—making you a savvier shopper.

Itinerary:

Pick-up

You’ll meet your guide at 9:30am at a central location in the Oaxaca historic district. Expect to walk about 12 city blocks as we visit market vendors and boutique galleries, comparing the quality, workmanship, design, materials, and weaving techniques of different pieces.

Stops 1-4

We’ll stop at four different venues to explain the different processes and show you a range of textiles at different price points. You’ll learn about the different types of looms and the cloth they produce, as well as the indigenous stories that are woven into certain pieces. Some textiles are made for personal use and some are produced for tourists. You’ll learn how to spot the difference. The tour will conclude at 1:30pm, returning to the same place we started.
